Visiting
glass artist David Huchthausen’s loft was among the highlights of last April’s
Museum members trip to Seattle.
David
describes himself as the consummate accumulator . . . and for those of us who
had the privilege of taking in the almost overwhelming density of his
collections, “consummate accumulator” could be an understatement.
From
extraordinary art deco glass to martini shakers of various designs and from oodles
of humorous salt-and-pepper shakers to a remarkable array of Bakelite baubles
(my favorites!), David’s loft was a feast for the eyes.
David’s
glasswork was present, too, and therein lies the serendipity, providing a
“teaser” months ahead of this Saturday’s opening of Huchthausen: A Glass Retrospective at the Woodson Art Museum.
Talk
about visual treats!
Huchthausen: A Glass Retrospective
brings together thirty glassworks spanning the artist’s forty-year career. That
career started here in Wausau at the University of Wisconsin-Marathon County
and includes David’s work with the Woodson Art Museum as curator of three Americans in Glass exhibitions in 1978,
1981, and 1984.
Over
the years, the Museum has been the happy recipient of gifts of David’s glass,
and his work frequently has been included in exhibitions at the Woodson drawn
from our collection.
The
retrospective remains on view through January 19, providing ample time this
holiday season and into the New Year to visit the Woodson Art Museum. You’ll be
dazzled by David Huchthausen’s glass artistry!
